Growth ops

Move tattoo bookings off Instagram DMs

Instagram is a discovery channel, not a booking system. Tattoo shops that negotiate times, prices, and “deposits” only in DMs lose messages, double-book, and cannot enforce policy. Move booking to a hosted page or site embed with live availability and deposits; keep DMs for taste questions and portfolio vibes. Inkdesk gives every shop a book URL and embeds at $50/shop/month.

What DMs are good for (and what they are not)

Good: “Do you do color realism?”, reference image sharing, aftercare reassurance, human tone. Bad: final time-slot negotiation, collecting card deposits, storing consent, running a waitlist, proving who was confirmed on Saturday.

When booking lives in /features/online-booking, artists get time back and the shop gets a record that reminders and no-show policy can attach to.

A one-week migration plan

Day 1: Provision the shop, set artist hours, set deposit rules, connect Stripe Connect. Day 2: Put the hosted book link in the Instagram bio and highlights; add Book on the website via widget if you have a site (/features/booking-widget, /integrations/wordpress). Day 3: Change DM auto-reply / saved reply to: “Books open here: [link]. Include references in the form / next steps after you pick a slot.”

Three install surfaces — WordPress plugin, app/snippet, or hosted book link + QR.

Day 4–5: Refuse to lock times only in DM—send the link. Day 6–7: Review no-shows and funnel drop-off; adjust deposit size or quote flow. Keep talking about art in DMs; stop treating the thread as the calendar of record.

Handle pushback from regulars

Regulars used to sliding into DMs. Offer white-glove help once: you or the desk books them into Inkdesk while on the phone or in person, then ask them to use the link next time. Do not run a permanent shadow DM calendar for VICs—that restarts the fire.

Guest artists should use the same tenant book flow so the shop does not inherit five personal calendars.

Deposits end DM theater

“I’ll send deposit Friday” in a thread is how chairs die. Require deposit in the book flow for hold-worthy work—/features/deposits and /blog/how-to-take-tattoo-deposits. When payment confirms, the appointment is real; when it does not, the slot opens for someone else or waitlist (/features/waitlist).

Keep Instagram as marketing

Post healing photos, flash drops, and shop culture. Point every CTA to Book. Measure booked-from-bio for a month. Shops that make this switch usually wonder why they waited—empty DM promises stop setting the schedule.

Inkdesk is $50/shop/month for the booking CRM behind that link—not an Instagram API gimmick.

FAQ

Should we turn off DMs entirely?

No. Use DMs for conversation; use the book link for times and deposits.

What if someone will not click the link?

They can call the shop or book at the desk. Do not recreate the full scheduler in chat for people who refuse the link.

Can the book page match our brand?

Hosted page works out of the box; embeds sit on WordPress, Webflow, and other sites with accent/widget settings from the cabinet.
